What is a part-time Australian School Based Apprenticeship?

An Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) program combines paid work and structured training whilst enrolled in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

The ASBA Program enables students to undertake at least one full day’s paid work with a host employer and carry out a Certificate II in Automotive at TAFE whilst remaining at Secondary College completing their VCE or VCAL.

Australian School Based Apprenticeships are undertaken during years 11 & 12 and can also start in year 10. Australian School Based Apprenticeships are required to carry out 120 days in the workplace and complete the Certificate II training at TAFE to complete the Apprenticeship. This may be completed in a minimum of 18 months and up to a maximum of 36 months.

Upon completion of the Australian School Based Apprenticeship program, if the Apprentice wishes to roll-over into a Cert III Apprenticeship, they will receive credit of approx. nine months towards their first year.

The ASBA program includes a mutual training and work arrangement under a Commonwealth Training Agreement.
