16 March 2006 - Motorcycle forum

VACC is hosting a forum - “Two Wheels to the Future” – on Saturday 18 March, commencing 9:00 am at Leonda by the Yarra to examine issues related to motorcycle licensing, legislation, and policies and practices.

“To be attended by motorcycle industry representatives, industry experts, key people from the motorcycling community, and convened by radio personality Jon Faine, it is hoped that this forum will provide the impetus for some new thinking about Victoria’s motorcycling laws, traffic management and motorcycling generally,” VACC Executive Director David Purchase said.

Key speakers include: Professor Marcus Wigan, Professor of Transport Systems Napier University, Neil O’Keefe, Chairman of the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council, and Dale Maggs, President, Motorcycle Riders Association.

At 1:00 pm a large convoy of riders will arrive at the forum to present a petition to Denis Napthine MP.

“Motorcycles and scooters are not going to go away - sales are up 40% over the past five years.

“We now need to face that reality and find new ideas and creative solutions to the many-headed problem of cars, motorcycles, trucks and bicycles co-inhabiting the same traffic space.

“The failings and contradictions in current motorcycling laws and licensing practices comes at a price,” Mr Purchase said.

“Motorcycle riders are thirty times more likely to suffer serious injury and death than car drivers. But look out over any city street and you will see a continuous stream of young women, and young men, riding to and from work.

“It is hoped that this forum will be the catalyst for a thorough overhaul of motorcycling legislation and will assist in finding creative solutions to risks associated with road sharing and driver behaviour,” Mr Purchase said.
