18 May 2006 - Transport Plan

VACC Executive Director David Purchase said that while it’s a positive to see real money being directed to Victoria’s transport needs, the Transport Plan announced by the Minister is abstract and lacking in sufficient detail.

“Victoria is to finally see some real investment in traffic infrastructure over the next ten years, but we need to know exactly how the Bracks’ Government intends to spend its $10.5-billion,” Mr Purchase said.

Mr Purchase said the timelines and information released provided only an indication of where the money was to go, but not enough hard facts.

“We want to know more,” he said. “Where is the detail in the plans? How will this spending combat rising congestion? How will it lower freight and transport times?

“In the next ten to fifteen years, the freight task is expected to double. It is high time we began to build infrastructure for tomorrow, for the future needs of business, of commuters and of the community.

“When will the works on the roads and rail start? There is some urgency with this as construction will take time and will also disrupt road, rail and public transport,” Mr Purchase said.
