27 July 2006 - Pumps pour precise petrol - perfect!

A Consumer Affairs Victoria blitz of 200 petrol station pumps across the State has found almost all were accurate, the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) said today.

VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said this was great news both for motorists and petrol station operators.

“Drivers can be certain they are getting what they pay for at the pump,” Mr Purchase said.

“The sweep of more than 200 petrol, diesel and LPG pumps found almost all were delivering correct amounts of fuel – which has been a significant improvement on previous blitzes.

“In this current climate of petrol price rises, Victorian motorists can be assured that the service station sector is doing the right thing.”

Mr Purchase said only a few bowsers out of the 217 were found to have very minor faults which the stations dealt with immediately.

“Our operators understand the pain at the pump. Unfortunately, petrol prices are controlled by the oil companies, movements in the world crude price, and the impost of Government excise and GST.

“The service station operator makes just a few cents on every litre sold,” he said.

“As this recent blitz by Consumer affairs Victoria shows, recent claims made by Today Tonight were incorrect.

“The community has a right to expect better,” Mr Purchase said.
