31 August 2006 - Use only registered LPG fitters

Motorists need to be patient and ensure they are using only registered LPG fitters, or risk driving an unroadworthy car, the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) said today.

VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said motorists must check their LPG fitters are registered with the Alternative Automobile Fuels Registration Board (AAFRB) before they convert their cars.

“There is currently a waiting period for LPG conversions, but the AAFRB installers are the only recognised qualified converters and any conversion performed by other parties will not be recognised by VicRoads,” he said.

“Using an installer not registered with AAFRB will mean you have a vehicle that is technically unroadworthy and, more than likely, uninsurable.”

Mr Purchase said since the Federal Government’s announcement to subsidise LPG conversions, motorists’ interest in LPG conversions had skyrocketed.

“There are 400 converters currently in Victoria, employing more than 1100 fitters,” he said.

“With the savings on LPG fuel, plus the Government subsidy, an LPG conversion pays for itself well within six months.

“But until the industry can grow to meet the increased demand, VACC recommends motorists plan ahead and book now.”

Mr Purchase said motorists could find registered fitters by contacting the AAFRB by logging on to its website, aafrb@vacc.com.au.

Application forms for motorists wanting to apply for the LPG subsidy would be available from early September at Centrelink and Medicare shopfronts, or from the Federal Government’s website www.ausindustry.gov.au. This subsidy could be claimed from 1 October 2006.
