25 August - Extreme weather conditions make vehicle safety a priority
VACC, the peak Automotive Industry body in Victoria, is calling on motorists to ‘winterize’ their vehicles.

It is important that vehicles are properly maintained and that both drivers, and vehicles, are well equipped to deal with extreme weather conditions.

“Victorians have had to contend with wild winter weather recently. We have experienced a mix of warm sunshine one minute and storms the next. At this time of year, the weather can change quickly. VACC urges drivers to be aware of this and to ensure they, and their vehicles, are suitably prepared,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said.

“VACC figures show one-in-four vehicles in the State are unsafe. Too many vehicles are failing the five key safety areas - tyres, lights, brakes, steering and restraints. A free Five Point Safety Check, by a participating VACC repairer, can help identify defects when a car is serviced.
“VACC also advises motorists to ask the repairer to make sure their vehicle is able to withstand cold and wet weather.

“In particular, drivers should have the car battery checked. Winter-type weather leads to increased demands on the battery. Cold starts, lights, heaters, demisters, electric seats, electric mirrors and windscreen wipers all depend on the battery and the electrical system. At the same time, have your charge system and drive belt checked.

“Ensure you are visible. Only proceed on your journey if your windows and mirrors are clear and do not forget to clean the lights. It is important to see and be seen.

“And before getting into the car, check the tyres for tread and make sure they are inflated to the correct pressure. Stopping distances in the wet and ice are greater than in warm, dry conditions. Correct tyre tread depth is important as it disperses water away from the tyre and prevents aquaplaning.

“But maintaining a safe and well prepared vehicle is not enough in itself. Drivers should modify their driving habits and adapt to the road and weather conditions.

“It is a good idea to ‘Winterize’ all vehicles during this period, even those only driven at other times of year. Maintaining a safe and serviced vehicle will save you money in the long run and enhance your year-round driving experience,” Mr Purchase said.
