A Geelong automotive technician is heading to Europe, thanks to a prestigious award.
Joseph Atkinson, of Point Lonsdale, has received an Australian Overseas Foundation (AOF) Scholarship.
The 23 year old, his parents, sponsors and employers were at VACC House, Melbourne, along with 5 other recipients, to collect the Award from Grant Sutherland, Chief Executive of Gordon Institute, TAFE College.
“I have always wanted to travel overseas, but this means I can go as part of my profession. The Automotive Industry is always evolving, especially the electrical side, and so to be able to go to Europe and see the technology and work practices, first hand, will be awesome,” Joe said.
Joe completed his apprenticeship in 2008 from Gordon Institute TAFE College and now works at Smiths of Geelong, a premier Holden Dealership and VACC member.
In his spare time, Joe is a volunteer and Board Member of the Bellarine Railway, a preserved tourist railway, which runs between Drysdale and Queenscliff.
“I am sure I will see a railway or two during my two years in Europe. My hobby allows me to learn more about engines and mechanical systems, as well as meet new friends and contacts.
“Professionally, I would like to return from my OS trip with a greater understanding of systems, mechanical and electronic. Personally, I would like to come back knowing I have represented my country and given some input from an Australian point of view, as well as be able to relay the information I learn over there, to colleagues and apprentices here,” said Joe.
The AOF was created in 1956 and provides opportunities for work and study experience to outstanding young Australians, aged between 21 and 27, who have completed a trade apprenticeship or vocational traineeship to level 3.
Over the last 53 years, there have been 309 AOF Scholarships.
