VACC, the peak Automotive Industry body in Victoria, is today publicizing information aimed at managers and drivers of company cars and commercial vehicles.
The ‘Guide to Safe Work Related Driving’ is an important document that provides practical advice to employers and employees on measures they can take to reduce risks associated with work related driving.
“Every time you step into your company car or work vehicle, you are subject to health and safety regulations,” VACC Executive Director, David Purchase, said.
“The ‘Guide to Safe Work Related Driving’ spells out, in clear terms, that a commercial vehicle is a work-place and employers and drivers have responsibilities,” said Mr Purchase.
The ‘Guide’ has been produced by Work Safe and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).
The ‘Guide to Safe Work Related Driving’ is important because:
- About 30% of all vehicles registered in Australia are used for business purposes;
- Over 50% of all new vehicles are purchased initially for commercial use;
- A third of all travel is work related;
- Fleet vehicles travel about three times the distance of the average private car;
- Fleet driving represents an increased crash risk relative to non-fleet driving;
- Vehicle accidents represent 41 % of all compensated work fatalities.
The ‘Guide to Safe Work Related Driving’ will be presented today by Minister for Roads and Ports, Mr Tim Pallas, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner, Ken Lay and VACC at Freight Week 2009.
